Toe-Bling, 1907 Style

April 22, 1907 San Bernadino The trial of R. Patterson begins here today, wherein the accused must answer to the charge of robbery. Patterson, a brakeman on the Santa Fe line, became acquainted with a young Pole, a tailor, en route from New York to Los Angeles. They drank together, and after Patterson climbed into his berth to slumber, was roughly awakened by a train officer and the aforementioned Pole. Said Pole accused Patterson of stealing a diamond ring from his pocket; upon investigation, the ring in question was indeed found within Patterson’s stocking, upon his toe. Patterson insisted that the drunken Pole had given him the ring for safekeeping, fearing that he would be robbed of it in the night given his beliquored condition. Patterson was arrested.
